Description

Octavo of 590 pages, ivory vellum, lace (contemporary binding). The Dream of Scipio, an encyclopaedia of celestial and terrestrial phenomena, is one of the most important scientific texts of Antiquity. This first edition, published by the Lyon presses of Sébastien Gryphe, contains six astronomical figures and the famous world map, printed for the first time in 1493, which shows only three continents: Europe, India, Perusta and Ethiopia (the future America, referred to only as "incognita"). Manuscript annotations, a fine copy. This is followed by the famous Saturnalia, Roman celebrations.
