Description

Descartes wrote this treatise in 1632 and 1633. In it, he defended in particular the heliocentric system of Copernicus, but after the condemnation of Galileo, he decided not to publish this work during his lifetime. Finally, according to his wishes, it was only published after his death. At the end of 1663, the Le Gras family and Clerselier disputed the privilege of publishing Descartes's posthumous works. Our cover page bears the same typographic mark as the Thomas Girard state (with 6 fleurons) which is canonically considered to adorn the true original edition. This indicates that it was most likely the first printing of the first edition.
