Description

Cloth stamped with gilt letters on the spine. Internally clean and fine, without any marks. 266 pages and four plates. First edition of Eddington's first monograph. "In his first book, Stellar movements and the structure of the universe (1914), Eddington brought together all the material from some fifteen articles, most of which had been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society between 1906 and 1914. The cosmological knowledge of the period was summarised and the most difficult problems were defined, and he clearly declared his preference for the speculation that spiral nebulae were other galaxies beyond our own Milky Way, which was itself a spiral galaxy".
